Implementation Tip

Check for a recommended event name (generate_lead, sign_up, purchase) before inventing one: GA4's built-in reports read them, and the ecommerce reports only work with the recommended ecommerce events. Names are case-sensitive, so pick one style (snake_case) and stick to it. Custom parameters need a custom dimension in GA4 before they show in reports.

Event and parameter names pass GA4 naming rules (format, 40-character limit, reserved names and prefixes).

Events and Parameters in GA4

In GA4 every interaction is an event, and the parameters sent with it decide what you can report on. Plan names and parameters before tagging, and register each custom parameter as a custom dimension in GA4, or it won't appear in standard reports.

GA4 Naming Rules

The checks in the tool follow Google's collection rules:

  • Event and parameter names start with a letter and use only letters, numbers and underscores.
  • Names can be up to 40 characters; most parameter values up to 100.
  • Up to 25 parameters per event.
  • Names are case-sensitive: sign_up and Sign_Up are two different events.
  • Reserved names (such as session_start, first_visit and user_engagement) and the prefixes firebase_, google_ and ga_ can't be used.

Prefer Recommended Events

Before inventing a name, check Google's recommended events (generate_lead, sign_up, purchase and others). They come with documented parameters, and some reports depend on them: the ecommerce reports only read the recommended ecommerce events.
