In depth

Establishing E-E-A-T with Article Schema

Article and BlogPosting markup gives search engines the headline, author, publisher and dates in a structured form. It doesn't create Experience, Expertise, Authoritativeness or Trust on its own; it makes the authorship and dates you already show on the page easier for machines to read.

Top Stories and Discover

Google says there is no markup requirement for Top Stories, and Discover doesn't need markup either. Article markup helps Google pick the right title, image and dates; for Discover, large images at least 1200px wide matter more.

Strategic Implementation Checklist

For maximum SEO impact, ensure your Article schema includes:

  • Author name and url: link to the author's bio page so readers and search engines can see who wrote it.
  • dateModified: update it only when the content meaningfully changes.
  • Image: Google recommends several high-resolution images (at least 50,000 pixels, width x height) in 16:9, 4:3 and 1:1 ratios.
  • Headline: Should match the H1 tag for semantic consistency.

Markup Is Not a Substitute for Content

Article schema describes content; it doesn't improve it. Google has no preferred word count: cover the topic fully for the reader and keep the markup accurate.
