Local SEO in Chicago
Service-area businesses decide Chicago’s map results
In Chicago, many of the businesses people search for never have a customer walk in: roofers, movers, mobile mechanics, junk car buyers. Google lets them hide their address and list the places they serve. How you set that up decides which suburbs you can appear in, and most profiles we see were set up in five minutes and never revisited.
The rules are tight. Google allows up to 20 service areas and says your overall area shouldn’t be more than about two hours’ drive from your base. You can’t draw a radius. In a metro with hundreds of towns, choosing those 20 deserves more thought than it usually gets.
Our Chicagoland work: junkcars.cash
We built the junkcars.cash website and run its local SEO and lead generation. It buys junk cars across Chicagoland and Northwest Indiana, which raises the questions most Chicago service-area businesses face sooner or later:
- Which 20 places go on the profile, in a metro with hundreds of towns?
- How do you show up on the Indiana side, where the towns, the competitors and the paperwork are different?
- How do you stay visible in a category where fake listings appear faster than Google removes them?
We run the same playbook up I-94 for its sister site, junk.cash in Milwaukee.
How we pick and prove service areas
Start with your job history. We map past jobs by ZIP code, then compare that against a geo-grid scan from our GBP Rank Tracker app, the free desktop tool Danish built for exactly this. Places where you get jobs but rank poorly go to the top of the list. Chicago itself counts as one service area, so most of your 20 slots can go to suburbs, while city neighborhoods like Lincoln Park or Lakeview get pages on your site.
Then the site has to back the profile up. Each priority area gets a page with real detail and schema from our JSON-LD generator for local businesses, so Google sees the same story twice.
The listings US customers cross-check
Google isn’t the only place a Chicago customer looks. Yelp, the BBB serving Chicago and Northern Illinois, Apple Business Connect for iPhone users, Bing Places, Nextdoor and Angi all show up for business-name searches. We make your details identical across them and close the duplicates.
The phone number matters here more than people expect. A 630 number on a Naperville listing looks local. A 312 number reads downtown, 847 reads the north and northwest suburbs, 219 reads Northwest Indiana. A toll-free number looks like a call center.
For reviews, a direct link made with our free Google review link tool and sent by text right after the job beats any card left on a counter.
Spam, suspensions and the categories that attract both
Towing, locksmiths and junk car buying are notorious for fake listings, keyword-stuffed names and lead-gen profiles with no real business behind them. We document them with screenshots and grid evidence and report them through Google’s redressal process. If your own profile gets suspended, usually over an address issue, our guide to suspended Business Profiles covers the fix.
Where this connects
Map rankings and paid listings work together in Chicago, so pair this with Local Services Ads and Google Ads in Chicago. The method behind this page is on our local SEO and Business Profile service, and the Chicago agency overview covers the city’s wider market.

How we work
- 01
Baseline scan
A geo-grid scan for your money keywords, a profile audit, and a citation check, so we know where you rank today and why.
- 02
Fix the profile and the site
Categories, services, photos, hours, schema and location pages go first, because Google reads those changes fastest.
- 03
Citations and reviews
Directory cleanup and a review request routine start in week one and run for the whole engagement.
- 04
Re-scan and report
Every month we re-run the same grid and show what moved, what didn't, and what we're changing next.
Questions
Can I rank in Naperville or Schaumburg if my business is in Chicago?
Sometimes, but distance works against you. Google ranks map results partly on how close a business is to the searcher, so a city-based crew struggles in the far suburbs. Service areas, suburb pages and reviews from customers out there widen your reach, and a geo-grid shows how far it stretches.
Should a Chicago service-area business hide its address?
If customers don't come to you, yes. Google's guidelines say businesses that serve people at their location should hide the address and list service areas instead. For owner-operators working from home, it also keeps your house off the map.
Do I need a separate profile for Northwest Indiana?
Only with a real, staffed location there. Otherwise add towns like Hammond or Gary as service areas, keep the whole area within about two hours' drive of your base, and build a page on your site for the Indiana side.
Do Yelp and BBB reviews help my Google ranking?
Not much directly, since Google leans on its own reviews. But customers check Yelp and the BBB before calling, and those profiles often appear when someone searches your business name, so a neglected one costs you calls.
What's the difference between Local Services Ads and the map pack?
Local Services Ads are paid, pay-per-lead listings that appear above the map for many trades and carry the Google Verified badge. The map pack below them is unpaid. A strong profile and a steady stream of reviews help you in both.
How much does local SEO cost in Chicago?
That depends on how many areas you want to cover, how crowded your category is and what's broken today. We start with a free geo-grid scan of your main search terms across your service area, then scope from what it shows.
