Local SEO in Melbourne

We help Melbourne businesses appear in the Google Maps pack in the suburbs where their customers are. That means optimising your Business Profile, mapping your rankings on a geo-grid with the tracker we built, setting up a review routine that stays inside ACCC and Google rules, and cleaning up your Australian listings.

Talk to us about Melbourne

What's included

Business Profile built on your registered details

Name exactly as registered with ASIC, the right primary category, service areas listed by suburb or region, and photos taken at your actual premises.

Suburb-by-suburb geo-grid scans

Ranking maps across the areas you serve, from Footscray to Box Hill, so you see where you hold the pack and where you drop out.

A review routine that's allowed

Ask every customer, never only the happy ones, and never pay for reviews. For AHPRA-registered practitioners, clinical testimonials stay out of your own ads and site.

Australian citations

Consistent details on True Local, Yellow Pages, Hotfrog, Apple Business Connect and Bing Places, plus sector sites such as hipages or HotDoc where they apply.

Area pages and schema

A page for each region you genuinely cover, with something specific to say about it and LocalBusiness markup that matches your profile.

Spam listing reports

Fake addresses and keyword-stuffed names crowd some Melbourne categories. We document them and report them to Google.

How the Maps pack works across Melbourne

Google picks the three map results by relevance, prominence and distance from the searcher. In a city spread as wide as Melbourne, distance does a lot of the deciding. A café in Collingwood isn’t competing with one in Carlton for the person standing on Smith Street, and a dentist in Glen Waverley has a different set of rivals from one in Moonee Ponds.

So one rank check from your shop tells you very little. We scan a grid of points across your area with the same method as the free geo-grid rank tracker we built, from a three-by-three up to a thirteen-by-thirteen grid, and colour each point by your position. Then you can see where you’re strong, where you fade, and which competitor takes over.

Inner city versus growth corridor

The strategy for Fitzroy is not the strategy for Wyndham.

In the inner suburbs, competitors sit a few doors apart. Brunswick Street has cafés on nearly every block, and the map pack for “brunch Fitzroy” can change from one corner to the next. Winning there is about relevance and reviews: the right categories, menus Google can read, photos that match what people search for, and a steady flow of fresh reviews.

Out in Casey, Melton or Wyndham, there are fewer businesses spread over much bigger distances, and customers will drive further. Here the work is widening the radius you rank in, usually through service-area settings, region pages on your site and reviews from customers in the suburbs you want to reach.

Reviews under Australian rules

Reviews still move the map, but in Australia they come with legal edges. The Australian Consumer Law treats fake reviews and selectively requested reviews as misleading conduct, and the ACCC has said manipulating reviews is an enforcement priority. Google’s own policies go further and ban incentives entirely.

The routine we set up is simple: a direct link from our review request link maker, sent to every customer by SMS or email after the job, and a reply to every review, including the bad ones.

Clinics need extra care. AHPRA’s advertising rules ban testimonials about clinical care, so we don’t repost patient reviews on your site or in ads, and we write review replies that thank people without confirming they’re patients.

Getting your details consistent

Google cross-checks your business against other sources, so your details need to agree everywhere. Start from the records that are hardest to change, your ABN Lookup entry and your ASIC business name, then make your profile, your site and every directory match them exactly. Old addresses from a previous lease are the most common mess we clean up.

A first month for a trade in the inner north

Say you’re an electrician based in Brunswick who wants more jobs across the inner north. In the first month we’d:

  • scan a grid across Brunswick, Coburg, Northcote and Thornbury to get a baseline
  • fix the primary category, services list and service areas
  • remove a duplicate listing left from an old mobile number
  • write region pages for the inner north and the north-west on your site
  • start the review requests and replies

We’ve done this kind of work for an auto recycler in Chicago, junkcars.cash, where we built the site and run local SEO remotely, much as we would for you.

Beyond the map pack

The pack covers the searches with local intent. The organic results underneath need SEO for Melbourne businesses, and if you want a sense of how we handle the same service in another big, spread-out city, see how we run local SEO in Chicago. Our local SEO service overview sets out the full process, and the Melbourne hub covers the rest.

How we work

  1. 01

    Baseline scan

A geo-grid scan for your money keywords, a profile audit, and a citation check, so we know where you rank today and why.

  2. 02

Fix the profile and the site

Categories, services, photos, hours, schema and location pages go first, because Google reads those changes fastest.

  3. 03

    Citations and reviews

Directory cleanup and a review request routine start in week one and run for the whole engagement.

  4. 04

    Re-scan and report

Every month we re-run the same grid and show what moved, what didn't, and what we're changing next.

Questions

Why do we rank in Richmond but not in South Yarra?

Google weighs how close you are to the searcher, and Richmond and South Yarra sit on opposite sides of the Yarra with their own sets of competitors. A geo-grid scan shows exactly where your visibility stops, which tells us where reviews and area content need to work harder.

Can a mobile business rank in Melbourne without showing a home address?

Yes. Tradies, cleaners and mobile services can hide their address and list service areas instead. In practice Google still ranks a service-area business from its verified location, so a plumber based in Reservoir will find the northern suburbs easier than Frankston. That's normal, and we plan around it.

Is it legal to offer customers a discount for leaving a Google review?

Google's own policy bans incentives for reviews, so don't, whatever the law allows. The ACCC also treats fake, bought or selectively requested reviews as misleading conduct under the Australian Consumer Law. Ask every customer, make it easy, and reply to what comes in.

Should each of our Melbourne locations have its own profile?

Only if each one is a real, staffed location customers can visit during your listed hours. A co-working mailbox or virtual office isn't eligible, and profiles built on one are a common reason for suspension.

Do Apple Maps and Bing matter for a Melbourne business?

They're smaller than Google but worth the hour it takes. iPhone users asking Siri for a café get Apple Maps results, and Bing Places feeds Bing and Microsoft's Copilot. We claim and match both so your details are identical everywhere.

How do you price local SEO for a Melbourne business?

By the number of locations, how crowded your category is in your suburbs, and how much cleanup the profile needs. We start with a free geo-grid scan of your main search terms and scope from there.
